Inflammation has been a popular topic in health news for years, but what is it and why does it matter. More importantly, how can a healthy microbiome help to reduce unhealthy inflammation, improve energy levels, and prevent disease.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is a natural process and one of the body’s defense mechanisms. Our immune system is responsible for inflammation when it recognizes damage and starts the healing process. Inflammation is not inherently bad, however, chronic inflammation can cause some diseases like cancer or arthritis.

Causes of Inflammation

Inflammation is a physical reaction triggered when the immune system releases chemicals from the body's white blood cells to protect your body from foreign substances. Inflammation can be caused by:

  • Injuries
  • Infections
  • Long term exposure to irritants
  • Autoimmune disease

Chronic Inflammation and Disease

Although inflammation is a necessary reaction of our immune system, prolonged inflammation can be harmful and may lead to disease. According to the Cleveland Clinic, prolonged inflammation can cause a build-up of plaque in the blood which may lead to serious conditions like heart disease or stroke. Additionally, researchers believe there may be a link between prolonged inflammation an Alzheimers.

Microbiome Health and Reducing Inflammation

The gut microbiome, an organ made of trillions of cells in your intestines, has been linked as an important factor in reducing inflammation. Dysbiosis is the medical term for a gut microbiome imbalance. Researchers have identified a link between Dysbiosis and inflammation.  By creating a balanced and diverse microbiome we reduce the health risk typically associated with inflammation.

The term "gut microbiota" describes the trillions of microorganisms that live inside our guts, affecting how efficiently our immune defenses work, and the extent to which we feel anxious or relaxed.

Beyond Disease to Better Health

Inflammation is not only related to disease but also plays a critical role in athletic performance and feeling energized. As we know, rest is important for achieving results, whether that is on the playing field or in the board room. When we are in a chronic state of inflammation, our body’s recovery is impacted, which leads to a drop in performance.
